Cross Training: Adding Variety to Spice Up an Exercise RoutineExercise is most probably one of the habits that every person should cultivate and cross training is an excellent method that will help make exercise a habit of a lifetime. Why is that? For many people, exercise can become a drudge; they realize that it is necessary for maintaining their health and they may start out enthusiastically, but after a while it becomes a chore and after a while they may lose interest. Cross training will remedy such a situation. Aside from bringing additional physiological benefits, it can re-introduce the fun factor and the feeling of novelty that individuals felt when they started exercising. What does cross training mean? Simply put, it means adding other activities to your regular physical fitness program. For instance, if you do tae-bo regularly, you might want to add weight training exercises. Tae-bo gives the cardiovascular system a good workout, but if you are not using weights, you will not increase muscle mass. Conversely, weight training will make you more muscular. But without aerobic exercise, your heart will not be getting the workout it needs. Sports experts agree that cross training provides a way for strength, aerobic fitness, and anaerobic fitness to complement each other. Also, if part of your body sustains an injury, you can continue working out using a different part of your body with other exercises. Also, sticking with just one activity for a certain length of time will have less of an impact on your body since your muscles have become used to the routine and are not being challenged anymore. A new stimulus is needed to push your body to work in different ways from those to which it has become accustomed. So for instance, if all you've been doing for exercise is jogging, you might want to try stair climbing to get a different set of leg muscles to work. Keep in mind though that you should always consult your physician before starting a cross training program to make sure that the exercises you plan to do are safe for you. Cross training helps ensure that getting fit doesn't become tedious or boring. You can play a round of golf with your friends today and go biking with your wife tomorrow. Customizing an exercise regimen is not that hard, what with all the choices in sports-related activities we have today. It can be done solo or with a group; at home, in the gym, or outdoors. The options are virtually endless. |
