What to Look for in Cross Training Clothes

Social scientists claim that the twenty-first century generation has become obsessed with physical fitness. Physical fitness clubs, gyms, health diets and other health-oriented businesses have appeared seemingly out of nowhere during the last five years or so. The popularity of healthy living also paved the way for another of man’s oldest obsession: fashion. Cross training clothes, exercise outfits and other physical fitness attire emerged to complement modern man’s obsession with healthy living. As the twenty-first century would have it, there is no reason why people can’t keep fit and healthy and look good at the same time.

But looking good should not be the only factor in choosing cross training clothes and exercise outfits. Quality, price and availability should also be on the top of one’s wise-shopping list. The clothing that should be chosen must be appropriate for the type of physical activity that would be performed. To choose wisely, here are some tips.

First, a person should consider the layers of clothing that he or she will need. Basically, clothing layers fall under three categories. One is the wicking inner layer; or the outfit that transfers moisture from the skin to the outer fabric layers for quick evaporation. Inner layers are designed to help a person stay dry and be more comfortable. Wicking inner layer clothes include briefs, sports bras and other types of undergarments. Another type of layer clothing is the insulating middle layer or clothes that provide warmth and breathability. Polyester fleece is the best example of this type of layer clothing. The third type is the weatherproof outer layer. These garments are meant to protect the person from extreme conditions and are usually made from waterproof materials (for rainy conditions) or breathable fabrics that help keep perspiration from salting inside the inner clothes. The latter are mostly used in physical activities done in minor conditions.

Exercise clothes should also be chosen based on the type of activity, that is, whether it will be done indoors or outdoors. Wicking fabrics are recommended for outdoor activities to maintain a stable body temperature in warm weather and prevent hypothermia in very cold weather. On the other hand, cotton fabrics are ideal for indoor activities since they are light and can help in keeping moisture away from the skin. Accessories can also be used, such as hats and gloves, depending on the type of weather or environment where the activity will take place.

Physical fitness activities can be fun. Most of the time people exercise not just to stay healthy but also to mingle and socialize. A person can meet new friends in gyms, health clubs and even on the track while jogging. Choosing the right cross training clothes is as important as choosing the right physical activity program.
